Mathieu van der Poel ends 2026 road season after World Championships bronze

Mathieu van der Poel has confirmed that the World Championships in Canada was the final road racing event on his 2026 calendar. The rider from the Netherlands now has only one sponsorship obligation left before he returns home to Europe for a break from competition.

At the hard-fought elite men's World Championships road race, Van der Poel captured a bronze medal. He had launched an attack with nearly 90 kilometres left to go in the race.

Although the move inspired by Van der Poel was eventually caught, he returned to the thick of the action. He secured his podium finish in the sprint behind solo winner Brandon McNulty of the United States.
