Fernando Alonso Explains Decision to Remain in Formula 1 with Aston Martin

Fernando Alonso has officially confirmed he will remain in Formula 1 to enter his 24th season with Aston Martin. The announcement puts an end to months of speculation, with the Silverstone-based team confirming that the 45-year-old Spaniard and teammate Lance Stroll will race together for a fifth consecutive season.

In a video posted on social media, the two-time World Champion teased that he had decided to retire from F1, before pausing and adding that it would not happen just yet. Speaking to the BBC about continuing to compete past his 46th birthday, Alonso explained that racing is a way of life for him and stressed his confidence that he remains as fast as anyone on the grid.

Despite Aston Martin facing a difficult 2026 season rooted to the bottom of the grid due to car and power unit issues, Alonso stated that certain results this year have reinforced his self-belief. He explained that even a P18 finish brings him internal satisfaction and pride because he still feels faster than other drivers.

Alonso stated he will only be happy to watch races from his living room once he notices a loss in his abilities, speed, or reflexes. Until that changes, the veteran driver feels he cannot stop racing while he continues to believe he is better than his competitors.
