Sarawak boccia squad achieves medal target at Para SUKMA 2026

Sarawak’s boccia squad successfully achieved its medal target at the Para SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026, despite facing fewer competition opportunities after the team and pairs events were excluded from the programme. The contingent concluded the individual events with five medals in total, consisting of two golds and three silvers.

Muhd Nur Sharizan Ikhwan Abdullah Saparudin claimed gold in the men’s BC1 individual event, a feat matched by Angeline Melissa Lawas in the women’s BC1 individual event. Meanwhile, Willyien Cliff Honseng secured a silver medal in the men’s BC1 individual event, while Jervis Chi Hong Zhe and Sheirviana Mathew earned silvers in the men’s and women’s BC3 individual events, respectively.

Head coach Honseng Andrias Nyawin stated on September 10 that the team had originally aimed for more medals before the host country removed the team and pairs events. Since those events were dropped, the team focused on achieving their objectives solely through the individual categories.

Coach Honseng also highlighted the team’s preparation, which focused on helping the athletes adapt to the environment, particularly the weather differences between Sarawak and West Malaysia, as well as the haze conditions in Selangor. To ensure the athletes remained healthy, they were kept inside the hotel as much as possible to minimize outdoor exposure.
