Paul Merson likens Martin Odegaard to a 'new £100m signing' for Arsenal

Former midfielder Paul Merson has highly praised Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard following the Gunners' 2-1 derby victory over Chelsea, describing the Norwegian's recent performances as resembling a "new £100million signing". Odegaard's stellar start to the season marks a significant return to form after a relatively underwhelming campaign last term.

Last season, despite Arsenal winning the Premier League title, Odegaard managed just one goal and six assists, representing a sharp decline compared to his second and third years with the club when he twice secured Arsenal’s Player of the Season award. However, the 27-year-old has bounced back brilliantly this term, scoring in the Community Shield as well as against Coventry City and Chelsea. In the derby victory, he ran the show to claim the man-of-the-match award, completing 24 line-breaking passes and scoring the winning goal.

Merson believed that Odegaard has recaptured the high standards he set two years ago, adding that the play leading to his winning goal against Chelsea was outstanding. The pundit also considers Arsenal among the favorites for the Champions League this season after their final defeat to PSG last term. While Merson expressed concern that the club's failure to sign a "superstar" attacker might impact them in the later stages of the European tournament, he praised the overall depth and defensive solidity of Mikel Arteta's squad ahead of their group-stage opener against Napoli.

Following the derby win, Odegaard lauded Arsenal’s fighting spirit to come from behind after conceding early. He also singled out Kai Havertz for special praise, highlighting the German’s intelligent movement which dragged defenders away and allowed Odegaard the space to secure the crucial three points.
