Underlying Causes of Erectile Dysfunction and Related Health Issues

A 37-year-old man stated that he has experienced erection problems from the beginning, takes medication for hypertension and cholesterol, along with a medication to prevent diabetes despite not having the disease, and found previous erectile medication ineffective. The expert noted that some antihypertensive drugs can adversely affect erectile response, which can be overcome by changing medicines, and the failure of previous erectile medications must be investigated regarding appropriateness or inadequate dosage.

In general, erectile dysfunction can be caused by physical or psychological factors or a combination of both. Physical factors include structural abnormalities of the penis, heart and lung problems, medication consumption for other conditions, malfunctioning hormone glands, issues with the urinary bladder and prostate gland, blood disorders, damage from infections like tuberculosis, gonorrhea, and mumps, brain and nervous system disorders, blood vessel problems, and chronic illnesses such as kidney or liver failure. Psychological factors include negative childhood influences, anxieties, guilt, depression, marital discord, lack of trust, poor communication, and belief in myths or ignorance.

In another case, a 19-year-old reader expressed concern over having one breast bigger than the other. The expert advised that if the individual is male, he may have gynecomastia and should consult a cosmetic surgeon; if female, it is a common condition among women and not a cause for worry unless lumps are present, though consulting a surgeon or gynecologist is an option.
