UK links 10-year veterans strategy to future Armed Forces recruitment

The UK Government has stated that its 10-year Veterans Strategy is intended not only to support former service personnel but also to strengthen the appeal of military service to future recruits. The position was outlined by Veterans and People Minister Calvin Bailey in a written parliamentary answer to Conservative MP Stuart Anderson regarding the progress made by the Office for Veterans’ Affairs.

Published in November 2025, the strategy provides a UK-wide framework for government, employers, charities, and wider society. Bailey noted that the plan recognizes veterans as one of the UK's greatest strategic assets, seeking to improve public understanding, celebrate their contributions, and challenge misconceptions regarding military service and life beyond the Armed Forces.

The strategy is structured around three key themes: Celebrate, Contribute, and Support. "Celebrate" focuses on recognizing service and sacrifice; "Contribute" highlights the skills, experience, and expertise veterans bring to society, the economy, and national security; while "Support" ensures access to timely and effective assistance when required.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Defence explicitly connected the treatment and public perception of veterans to future recruitment efforts. Although the parliamentary answer did not provide specific recruitment figures attributable to the strategy, Bailey emphasized that helping veterans succeed after service directly supports the attractiveness of a military career for future generations.
