Tim Wellens responds to Philippe Gilbert's World Championships criticism

Tim Wellens has responded to criticism from former world champion Philippe Gilbert after deciding to decline a call-up to the upcoming Road World Championships. Wellens stated that he intends to contact Gilbert directly to give him a piece of his mind.

Gilbert, who won the rainbow jersey in Valkenburg in 2012, had criticized Wellens, describing him as "totally disconnected from reality" for refusing to participate. He argued that riders should be "loyal, first and foremost, to your nation" and questioned Wellens' decision to skip the event.

The upcoming World Championships will feature another Belgian cyclist, Remco Evenepoel, who is considered one of the favourites.
