Team strategy pays off as Demi Vollering wins World Championship road race title

Demi Vollering secured the rainbow jersey in the elite women's road race at the 2026 UCI Road World Championships. Entering the event as the overwhelming favourite, the 29-year-old's victory required more than just individual strength, relying on the full support of the Dutch squad.

During her post-race press conference, Vollering repeatedly pointed out the significance of the team's effort. She expressed that it was incredible to see the plan finally work out after the performance demonstrated by the team today.

The rider noted that she had often stated in the past that winning with her required this exact approach. According to Vollering, the squad needed to set the team at the front and sacrifice every member to make the race very hard while staying in control.
