Ontario Premier Hopes Republicans Lose U.S. Midterm Elections

Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed hope on Thursday that U.S. President Donald Trump's Republican Party will lose control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. Addressing the escalating trade dispute between the two countries, Ford urged voters to hold Trump politically accountable, while clarifying that Canada has no intention of interfering in the U.S. elections.

The trade feud escalated after Washington banned certain Canadian dairy products, motorcycles, and most alcoholic beverages. This move followed Canada's retaliatory tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of U.S. goods. Trump has also taken steps to exclude Canadian products from major, long-term U.S. government contracts. Describing Trump as unreliable, Ford nevertheless expressed his belief that the U.S. president desires a trade deal before the midterms, urging Canada to resume negotiations as soon as possible.

The dispute between the figures has repeatedly turned personal since last year, when Trump abruptly halted trade talks after Ontario aired an anti-tariff television advertisement in the U.S. featuring former President Ronald Reagan. Ford previously mocked Trump over the matter, while Trump publicly criticized Ford and signed an executive order directing the U.S. government to refer to Lake Ontario as "Lake America"—a name Canada does not recognize.

Despite the trade friction, official communication continues on broader global issues such as Ukraine and Iran, with Carney noting that the two countries can compartmentalize their work. Meanwhile, Ford stated that Trump’s trade stance has unintentionally benefited Canada by reducing its economic reliance on the United States and fostering unprecedented national unity.
