Nintendo Announces US Switch Sale Enabled by Tariff-Related Refunds

Nintendo has announced a new "Customer Appreciation" sale in the United States, offering 30% off on dozens of Switch games, downloadable content, accessories, amiibo, and apparel. The sale is scheduled to run from September 13 through September 26 across the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, and other participating retailers, though a full list of discounted products has not yet been released.

According to the video game giant, this promotion was made possible in part by "tariff-related refunds." Nintendo explained that while it had previously absorbed most of the tariff-related costs, the returned funds from these refunds have helped facilitate the new discount event. This announcement follows earlier questions regarding how Nintendo would handle funds returned after the US tariff regime was legally challenged.

Nintendo had previously increased global prices on certain Switch products, citing factors such as tariffs, labor, shipping, and rising component costs. Following a court ruling that declared the tariffs illegal, Nintendo argued that consumers were not entitled to retroactive refunds, stating that buyers received exactly what they paid for. However, the company maintained that it absorbed tariff costs on the Switch 2 rather than passing them to buyers.

Fan reactions to the sale announcement have been mixed during what has already been a busy week for Nintendo. Recent developments include two back-to-back Nintendo Direct presentations, preorders for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Metroid Ravenous, the announcement of a 40th Anniversary Zelda Switch 2, and a new firmware update introducing VRR support for the Switch 2 in TV mode.
