India Targets 50 Space Launches Annually by 2030 Through Public-Private Cooperation

IN-SPACe Chairman Pawan Goenka stated that India is aiming to conduct 50 space launches annually by 2030. To reach this target, he emphasized that the government and private industry must work together to build the sector. His comments were published on X shortly after nine employee associations across the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) requested written clarification from Chairman V Narayanan regarding the agency's future role as private companies increase their involvement in space activities.

Goenka explained that India's decision to open the space sector to private players five years ago had two main goals: allowing ISRO to focus on new technological frontiers while enabling private industry to build capabilities at scale. Since then, the country's space ecosystem has grown from a handful of startups to more than 450, with private industry also successfully launching a rocket into orbit. Reaching the 2030 target will require significant expansion in rocket and satellite manufacturing, launch infrastructure, and related technologies.

Addressing how responsibilities would evolve, Goenka noted that ISRO will continue its research to push technological boundaries, while private industry is expected to translate those advancements into large-scale manufacturing. This includes producing more rockets and satellites, expanding launch capacity, and developing new technologies to create a complete space ecosystem. He highlighted the opportunity to "build in India, launch from India and serve the world from India" as the country seeks to expand its space economy.
