British Appaloosa Society introduces mandatory PSSM1 testing for main studbook

The British Appaloosa Society (BApS) has announced the introduction of mandatory PSSM1 testing for its main studbook. This initiative is designed to improve the long-term health and welfare of the Appaloosa breed.

The decision to implement this testing requirement with immediate effect was officially made during the society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in May.

Under the new rule, all foals registered in the BApS main studbook are required to meet specific health criteria. They must either test negative for PSSM1, which stands for polysaccharide storage myopathy type one, or be proven negative through parentage.
