At least five dead after Amazon cargo plane overshoots runway at Miami airport

At least five people were killed and five others injured after an Amazon cargo plane overshot a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, crashing into several vehicles and bursting into flames.

The aircraft, a 32-year-old Boeing 767 operating as a Prime Air flight by North Carolina-based cargo carrier 21 Air, had just arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the plane overran the runway around 2 p.m., striking multiple vehicles and catching fire, which sent thick black smoke into the sky. Miami-Dade County officials stated it was too soon to determine whether the deceased individuals were on board the plane or inside the vehicles that were hit.

More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the scene to extinguish the flames and assess patients. In addition to the five fatalities, three people were critically injured, and two others were hospitalized with less severe injuries. Images from the scene showed the aircraft resting on its belly near two semi-trucks, remaining largely intact despite the fire.

The crash prompted a full ground stop, closing all runways and taxiways at one of the nation's busiest airports and delaying approximately 250 flights by late Sunday afternoon. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the FAA was sending investigators to the site, while the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also gathering information. Amazon expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and pledged to cooperate fully with all investigations.
