Toto Wolff Confident George Russell Can Recover from Tough 2026 F1 Season

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has backed George Russell to overcome a difficult 2026 Formula 1 campaign and go on to contend for world titles in the future. Russell entered the season as a title favourite after finishing fourth in the standings last year, 169 points ahead of team-mate Kimi Antonelli. However, with nine races remaining this season, Russell occupies second place and trails Antonelli by 81 points.

Antonelli, who finished seventh in his rookie campaign, has capitalized on Mercedes' 2026 car to position himself within reach of becoming F1's youngest champion. At the Spanish Grand Prix, the 20-year-old secured his second consecutive victory following Monza, winning despite starting 19th on the grid while Russell started on the front row. The outcome led Russell to concede that he no longer feels he is in contention for the title.

Reflecting on Russell's career, Wolff recalled his junior achievements, including karting titles as well as rookie-year championships in Formula 3 and Formula 2, emphasizing that top drivers have the resilience to bounce back from difficult periods. Wolff also praised Antonelli's grounded personality and focus, noting that both the team and the Italian driver's family are helping him remain level-headed as the championship progresses.
