Mercedes Explains George Russell's Two-Stop Strategy in F1 Spanish GP

Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord has explained the rationale behind George Russell's two-stop strategy at the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix on the Madring circuit. Starting from P6 on hard tyres with an initial plan to complete a one-stop race, the British driver was forced to adapt after a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) was deployed at the end of lap 14.

At the moment of the VSC intervention, Russell was running directly behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, the only other driver in the lead pack who had started on hard tyres. Recognizing that overtaking and undercutting opportunities were severely limited on the Madring track, Mercedes instructed Russell to "box opposite to Leclerc." Since Leclerc opted to stay out, Russell pitted for medium tyres under the VSC before making a second stop on lap 28 to return to the hard compound.

Lord noted that the alternative strategy allowed Russell to display strong pace, ultimately forcing Ferrari to call Leclerc into the pits earlier than planned. This opened up clear air for Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, who went on to win the race after polesitter Lando Norris missed the pit entry when the VSC was called. Russell maintained heavy pressure on Leclerc in the closing laps and finished fifth, just 0.7 seconds behind, while setting the fastest lap of the race by four tenths.

Following the Grand Prix, Russell remained pragmatic, stating that a P5 finish was likely regardless of strategy due to the difficulty of overtaking at Madring. The result leaves Russell trailing championship leader Antonelli by 81 points, with the driver acknowledging that it is exceptionally unlikely he will be able to challenge for the title.
