Max Verstappen Reacts to Robin Raikkonen Joining Red Bull Young Driver Programme

Robin Raikkonen, the 11-year-old son of 2007 Formula 1 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen, has officially joined the Red Bull Young Driver Programme. The signing sets in motion an eventual goal for him to enter Formula 1 in around ten years' time. Robin earned the spot after performing well in karting, aiming to follow in the footsteps of his father, who raced in F1 across multiple stints between 2001 and 2021.

Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen revealed that he had a private conversation with both father and son prior to the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. Verstappen mentioned that he was already aware of the signing and expressed pleasure at seeing Robin join the programme. Addressing the future with a joke, Verstappen suggested he might still be racing when the young driver makes his debut, adding that he might eventually step aside if the team needs a seat for him.

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies explained the rationale behind the decision, praising Robin's speed, racecraft, and exceptional ability in karting. Mekies added that the young driver impresses with his maturity, calm approach, and clear focus on driving. Red Bull plans to develop Robin step by step over his motorsport journey, providing the necessary time, support, and resources without placing unnecessary pressure on him.
