Marc Marquez Wins San Marino GP to Take MotoGP Championship Lead

Marc Marquez capitalised on an opening-lap crash for Aprilia rival Marco Bezzecchi to win the San Marino Grand Prix and secure the lead in the MotoGP standings. Starting from pole position, Bezzecchi retained the lead into Turn 1 but slid out of the race at Turn 12. Marquez inherited the lead and fought off Jorge Martin and Alex Marquez to claim his fifth victory of the 2026 season.

During the early stages, Martin matched Marquez's pace and launched a pass into Turn 4 to take the lead. However, Marquez reclaimed top spot on lap 12 with an inside move into Turn 6. Martin subsequently suffered a major drop in pace, losing positions to Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta over the following laps to finish fifth.

Alex Marquez mounted a strong challenge late in the race, cutting the lead gap to just four-tenths of a second. However, Marc Marquez made no mistakes in the final laps to cross the line 0.657 seconds ahead, securing the brothers' first 1-2 finish of the season. Pedro Acosta impressed by rising from seventh on the grid to complete the podium for factory KTM.

Following the race, Marquez is now tied with Martin at the top of the standings on 274 points, holding the lead due to a greater number of race wins. Only 14 riders finished the race, with Ducati's Francesco Bagnaia joining Bezzecchi as a high-profile retiree.
