Lewis Hamilton Dismisses Max Verstappen's Frustration After Spanish Grand Prix Battle

At the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix on the new Madring circuit, Lewis Hamilton started fourth and made a strong start, entering Turn 1 alongside Max Verstappen behind Lando Norris and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. During the opening lap, Verstappen went onto the run-off area and passed Antonelli for second place, prompting Hamilton to suggest over team radio that the Dutchman ought to give the position back.

Verstappen's race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, agreed and requested his driver to return the position, a directive Verstappen met with an angry response over the radio. After the race, Verstappen explained that he was forced off the track to avoid a collision after Hamilton bottomed out on the kerbs and jumped back onto the track, adding that staying on line would have led to contact and potentially ended his race.

Hamilton dismissed Verstappen's frustration, characterizing the battle as pretty good racing. However, any possibility of resuming their battle was short-lived as the seven-time World Champion suffered a brake issue just a few laps later. Hamilton explained that his brake pedal briefly failed to stop the car, causing him to go wide and tap the barrier, before the pedal went long and forced his retirement.

The retirement dealt a blow to Hamilton's dwindling title hopes. Meanwhile, Verstappen secured a second-place finish, while Antonelli capitalized on Norris' Virtual Safety Car misery to claim the race victory.
