Lando Norris Demands Stricter FIA Penalties After Azerbaijan GP Collision

McLaren driver Lando Norris was forced to retire from the 51-lap Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the streets of Baku following a collision involving Alpine drivers Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly. The incident occurred during a Safety Car restart while Norris was running inside the top 10.

During the restart, race leader George Russell of Mercedes left his acceleration late, causing the field to bunch up heading into Turn 1. Colapinto locked up while attempting a dive down the inside and struck his teammate Gasly. Gasly's A526 was then sent careering into Norris's MCL40, launching the British driver into the barriers and ending his race.

Speaking after the incident, a furious Norris urged the FIA to be more strict and start handing out bans for careless driving that results in costly damage. Refusing to blame Russell's restart tactics, Norris stated that Formula 1 drivers are expected to anticipate low grip and tire temperatures, adding that such errors should not happen among those considered the best drivers in the world.

The retirement in Baku marks a further setback for Norris in the title fight. Following the race weekend, he now trails championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 116 points.
