Lando Norris Demands Race Ban for Franco Colapinto After Azerbaijan GP Crash

During a lap 36 restart at Formula 1's Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the Baku street circuit, a collision occurred involving Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, and Lando Norris. Colapinto locked up his cold front tyres into Turn 1 and crashed into his Alpine team-mate Gasly, with McLaren's reigning world champion Norris also getting caught up in the tangle. The incident forced all three drivers out of the race, capping off a frustrating afternoon for Norris, who had previously lacked pace and made a Turn 1 mistake that dropped him into the pack on the restart.

Following the collision, Norris expressed fury and urged the FIA to be stricter by handing out bans for careless driving, arguing that causing a restart crash warrants at least a one-race ban. He stated that Formula 1 drivers are expected to anticipate low grip and tyre temperatures, adding that the crash destroyed his car parts and resulted in high costs.

In response, Colapinto admitted fault for the crash, describing it as a major mistake caused by completely locking up on cold tyres and cold brakes. The Argentinian driver expressed disappointment and apologized to the Alpine team, the factory, his team-mate Gasly, and Norris, acknowledging that his error threw away a potential points finish.
