Kimi Antonelli Upset with Unnecessary Qualifying Crash at Azerbaijan GP

Formula 1 world championship leader Kimi Antonelli expressed frustration following a crash during qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. At the start of his second flying lap in Q1, the 20-year-old Italian made an unforced error, clipping the inside wall at the Turn 1 left-hander. The impact caused terminal suspension damage to his Mercedes W17, forcing him out of the session and leaving him 16th on the grid for Saturday's race.

Explaining the incident, Antonelli attributed the crash to a misjudgement caused by changing grip conditions. He noted that a stronger headwind compared to his previous lap made the front of the car turn more sharply, causing him to hit the wall despite turning in at the same spot. The damage prevented Antonelli from taking part in Q2, despite his initial lap having qualified him for the session. Meanwhile, teammate George Russell demonstrated the car's strong pace by securing pole position by eight-tenths of a second.

Prior to qualifying, Antonelli had already been on the back foot after missing a large portion of Thursday practice due to a hydraulic issue. While he previously achieved a memorable comeback victory from the rear of the grid at Monza, the Italian driver acknowledged that repeating the feat on Baku's 6km street circuit would be more difficult due to overtaking challenges. Nevertheless, Antonelli stated his plan is to get a clean start, avoid trouble, and maintain a strong pace during the race.
