Kimi Antonelli Self-Critical After Baku Qualifying Crash

F1 championship leader Kimi Antonelli will start Saturday's race in Baku from 16th on the grid following an unforced crash during the Q1 qualifying session. The 20-year-old Italian clipped the inside wall at Turn 1 at the start of his second flying lap, sustaining terminal suspension damage to his Mercedes W17 that forced him to park his car.

Although his initial lap time was sufficient to advance to Q2, Antonelli's inability to take part in the remainder of the session cost him a potential front-row start. The setback was further highlighted by the strong pace of the Mercedes car in Baku, with team-mate George Russell securing pole position by eight tenths of a second ahead of the field.

Antonelli called the incident an unnecessary misjudgement caused by changing grip levels and headwind conditions, explaining that the front of the car turned more than expected when he turned in at his usual spot. The driver had already been on the back foot over the weekend after losing a large portion of Thursday's practice session to a hydraulic issue.

Looking ahead to Saturday's race, Antonelli noted that repeating his previous spectacular win from the rear of the grid in Monza would be significantly more difficult on Baku's street circuit due to overtaking challenges. His plan for the race is to make a clean start, avoid trouble, and maintain a strong pace to achieve the best possible result.
