Kimi Antonelli holds commanding lead in 2026 Formula 1 championship fight

After 14 grands prix in the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship, Kimi Antonelli holds a formidable lead in the standings, sitting 81 points ahead of George Russell, 101 points clear of Lewis Hamilton, and 106 points ahead of Lando Norris. Historically, the largest absolute points deficit ever overturned was Max Verstappen's 46-point gap to Charles Leclerc in 2022, while James Hunt's 35-point comeback against Niki Lauda in 1976 would equate to roughly 97 points under the modern scoring system.

The remainder of the season faces uncertainty regarding the final race calendar. Due to the geopolitical situation, it currently appears unlikely that the events in Qatar on 29 November and Abu Dhabi on 6 December will take place, with Imola potentially hosting the season finale instead. Should these cancellations occur, Antonelli’s rivals would have just eight race weekends left to overturn the deficit, offering a theoretical maximum of 208 points, which includes the F1 Sprint in Singapore.

Antonelli benefits from a strong support team, including his father Marco, team principal Toto Wolff, and race engineer Peter Bonnington. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen praised the young driver's composure and performances following his latest victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, advising him to keep things simple and maintain his current approach.

Although defending champion Lando Norris has shown strong form with victories in Budapest and Zandvoort alongside a fourth-place finish at Monza, mathematical scenarios heavily favor Antonelli. Even if Norris scored all 208 remaining points, Antonelli would only require 103 additional points to seal the championship—fewer than the 116 points he gathered from his eight worst race results this season. Both Norris and Russell have acknowledged the steep challenge ahead, with Russell noting after his fifth-place finish in Madrid that it is exceptionally unlikely he remains in contention.
