Kimi Antonelli Addresses Ferrari Speculation Following Monza Victory

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, the 20-year-old championship leader born in Bologna, secured a sensational victory at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza after recovering from an engine change grid penalty to finish ahead of teammate George Russell. Despite driving for a rival team, Antonelli received a warm reception from the partisan crowd cheering for Ferrari. Speaking to automoto.it, he described his home podium as the most beautiful of the year, adding that hearing the crowd sing the Italian national anthem and chant his name gave him goosebumps and the energy to push further.

His performance reignited talk over a potential future switch to Ferrari, a team that has not fielded an Italian driver since Giancarlo Fisichella covered for the injured Felipe Massa 17 years ago, and has not had a full-time home driver since signing Ivan Capelli for the 1992 season 34 years ago. Antonelli played down the speculation, emphasizing his loyalty to Mercedes, which has backed and guided him since he was 12 years old. While he did not entirely close the door on a future move, he stated that his current focus remains on winning as much as possible with Mercedes.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff also addressed the situation when asked by Belgian outlet RTBF, acknowledging that Ferrari's admiration for the championship leader is well known. Wolff argued that Ferrari "should have done the job six or seven years ago" rather than only now recognizing Antonelli's talent, given he has been in Mercedes' junior program since age 11. Wolff added that Ferrari would inevitably do everything it could to secure an Italian driver.
