How Kimi Antonelli and Mercedes Capitalized on Opportunity for Victory

Kimi Antonelli secured victory at Formula 1's Spanish Grand Prix after taking advantage of a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period triggered by Lance Stroll's retirement. Before the VSC deployment, the race appeared destined for Lando Norris. However, having already passed the pitlane entry when the VSC was called, Norris missed the chance to pit, whereas Antonelli managed to enter the pitlane at the last second, complete his stop, and take the virtual race lead behind Charles Leclerc, who had yet to pit.

Antonelli contributed to the outcome by deliberately slowing down when yellow flags were shown in the final sector around Turns 19 and 20, where Stroll had stopped. Telemetry data showed that on lap 14, Antonelli went through Turn 19 29 km/h slower and reached the Turn 20 braking zone 24 km/h slower than on lap 13. Compared to Max Verstappen, who was running six seconds behind under the same yellow flag conditions, Verstappen was 15 km/h faster through Turn 19 and 18 km/h quicker into Turn 20. Antonelli's extra deceleration bought critical time for his team to make the call.

The Mercedes pitwall also anticipated the situation early. Race engineer Peter Bonnington alerted Antonelli over the radio that a VSC was likely before race control officially activated it. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff highlighted that the entire communication process from the strategy group to Bonnington and then to Antonelli took only about three seconds, allowing the Italian driver to dive into the pitlane as soon as the VSC signal appeared.
