George Russell holds off Max Verstappen for dramatic Azerbaijan GP victory

At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the Baku Street Circuit, Mercedes driver George Russell converted a dominant pole position—secured after beating Charles Leclerc by over eight-tenths of a second in qualifying—into a hard-fought victory. At the race start, Russell launched cleanly to retain his lead into Turn 1, while Oscar Piastri picked off Leclerc for second place. Kimi Antonelli, starting 16th following a Q1 crash, dropped to 17th early on, while Max Verstappen pushed forward from eighth on the grid.

The race dynamics shifted dramatically following multiple Safety Car deployments. The first Safety Car emerged on Lap 31 when Alex Albon crashed into the barriers, prompting the entire field to dive into the pits for fresh tyres. On the Lap 36 restart, Franco Colapinto heavily locked up into Turn 1, triggering a multi-car collision that eliminated Lando Norris and Pierre Gasly, which allowed Antonelli to navigate the chaos cleanly and climb to seventh before a second Safety Car was called.

When racing resumed on Lap 39, Verstappen pounced on Piastri as the McLaren driver locked up and slid into the run-off area, dropping Piastri out of the points. In the closing stages, Verstappen set the fastest lap and closed the gap to Russell to just four-tenths of a second. Despite intense pressure and yellow flags brought out on the final lap by Valtteri Bottas hitting the barriers, Russell held his nerve to cross the finish line just a tenth of a second ahead of Verstappen. Isack Hadjar finished third to complete the podium, followed by Leclerc in fourth and Antonelli in fifth.
