George Russell Fends Off Verstappen for Azerbaijan Grand Prix Victory

George Russell converted his pole position into a dominant victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, fending off Red Bull's Max Verstappen to secure his third win of the 2026 season. Despite managing the race from the front, two safety car periods brought late-race pressure from Verstappen, but the Mercedes driver held on to cross the finish line just ahead of his rival. Isack Hadjar marked his return from injury by taking third place for Red Bull.

The grand prix turned unpredictable on lap 30 when Williams driver Alex Albon crashed into the TecPro barriers at Turn 5, triggering the first safety car and causing a flurry of pitstops. On the lap 36 restart, chaotic scenes unfolded into Turn 1 as Franco Colapinto locked up and collided with his Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly, taking down McLaren's Lando Norris in the process and bringing out a second safety car.

Following the final restart, Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, while Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli recovered from 16th on the grid to finish fifth. McLaren's Oscar Piastri dropped out of podium contention after running wide into Turn 1 while defending against Hadjar. With his victory, Russell closed the gap in the championship standings to 66 points behind leader Antonelli ahead of the next round in Bahrain, hosted by Malaysia.
