George Russell Confident of Victory After Dominant Baku Pole

George Russell has expressed confidence in fighting for victory at the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix after securing a dominant pole position at the Baku City Street Circuit. The Mercedes driver set the fastest lap ahead of Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri on Friday for the upcoming 51-lap race.

Russell recorded a gap of eight-tenths of a second over Leclerc's SF-26, marking the largest qualifying margin in F1's latest era as well as the biggest of his entire career. After topping Thursday practice, he delivered a strong final lap in Q3, benefiting from a slipstream behind Hajar on the back straight. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, who topped FP3 earlier on Friday, ended up eighth in Q3 after a late yellow flag caused by Lando Norris disrupted his final attempt.

Looking ahead to Saturday's 51-lap race, the British driver is aiming for his first win of 2026 since Austria. Despite acknowledging that Leclerc starting alongside him and Ferrari's race pace could present challenges alongside Baku's history of Safety Cars and strategic disruptions, Russell remains confident in his chances to go for the win.
