Franco Colapinto Apologises After Baku Collision with Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris

During the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit, both Alpine cars were running in the top 10 following a Safety Car restart triggered by Alex Albon's crash. As cars fought for position entering Turn 1, Franco Colapinto made an aggressive attempt to gain track position on cold tyres, locking up and spearing into teammate Pierre Gasly. The contact created a domino effect that took out McLaren's Lando Norris.

The incident brought out another immediate Safety Car. Both Gasly and Norris were forced to retire on the spot, while Colapinto managed to limp back to the pits before also retiring from the race. The crash cost the Enstone-based team vital points in the midfield Constructors' Championship standings.

Following the race, the Argentine driver took full responsibility for the clash, describing it as a major mistake caused by a complete lockup with no tyres and no brakes. Colapinto offered his apologies to the team, Gasly, and the factory staff, expressing disappointment at throwing away a hard-fought chance to score points. Managing Director Steve Nielsen was seen exiting the pit wall upon Colapinto's return to the garage.

When asked about the team's reaction, Colapinto stated that everyone remained supportive while he accepted full blame to learn from the experience. He also indicated that he attempted to speak with Gasly after the race, though his teammate was understandably very upset following the collision.
