Formula 2 to Trial Expanded Race Weekend Format in Baku for 2026 Season

Formula 2 has announced an expanded race weekend format for Round 12 of the 2026 season, scheduled at the Baku City Circuit from 24 to 26 September. The revised schedule will feature one Free Practice session, two Qualifying sessions, one Sprint Race, and two Feature Races.

This one-off modification applies exclusively to the Azerbaijan round, where F2 serves as the sole support category for the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Bruno Michel, CEO of FIA Formula 2, stated that the Baku timetable provided an opportunity to expand the show and heighten entertainment for attending fans. He confirmed that the series will revert to its standard format for the final two rounds of the 2026 season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

The revised schedule spans three days. Thursday morning begins with a single 45-minute Free Practice session, followed by two consecutive 20-minute Qualifying sessions in the afternoon. Friday opens with the Sprint Race, with the grid set in reverse order from the first Qualifying session, followed by the first Feature Race in the afternoon, using the grid set directly from that same session. The second Feature Race takes place on Saturday morning, with its grid determined by the results of the second Qualifying session.

Drivers securing pole position in either Qualifying session will earn 2 points. Both Feature Races will use the standard points allocation, including the Fastest Lap point for drivers finishing within the top ten, in accordance with the FIA Formula 2 Sporting Regulations.
