Formula 1 Drivers Share Mixed Views on New Madring Circuit

Formula 1 drivers have completed two one-hour practice sessions at the 5.4km Madring circuit for the Spanish Grand Prix. Following initial simulator runs, drivers experienced a layout combining the unforgiving nature of a street circuit with numerous medium to high-speed corners. Aside from an FP2 crash involving Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad, the day's running concluded without major disruptions.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri noted the circuit's difficulty, explaining that several sections require drivers to turn toward walls rather than brushing past them. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was impressed by the amount of grip on the new track. Conversely, George Russell described Madring as a very high risk circuit and expressed concern that overtaking would prove tough. Drivers also faced challenges with combined braking zones, tyre wear, rapidly changing grip levels, and traffic.

The venue drew contrasting opinions from Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen. Perez, a Madrid resident driving for Cadillac, praised the facility and anticipated chaotic qualifying and race sessions. On the other hand, four-time world champion Max Verstappen commended the construction efforts but reiterated his general dislike for street circuits, maintaining his preference for traditional tracks like Spa.

Additionally, rapid track evolution impacted energy deployment strategies for teams and drivers. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso recovered from a clutch issue to participate in the second half of FP2, later explaining that managing tyre temperatures and battery charge states at the end of a lap was particularly sensitive with the Honda power unit.
