Charles Leclerc Issues Update on Monza-Damaged Ferrari F1 Power Unit

Charles Leclerc has stated that Ferrari is still evaluating whether the power unit used at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza can be salvaged. Should the team fail to recover the engine, Leclerc faces the live possibility of a grid penalty at a future race.

Leclerc had an upgraded power unit fitted for the Monza weekend, but his race ended abruptly following a heavy Lap 1 crash at Parabolica that measured a 60G impact. The damaged power unit was removed, and Ferrari fitted an older specification engine for the subsequent event at MADring. Leclerc confirmed that engineers are still inspecting the Monza unit, noting that a grid penalty will likely follow if it cannot be saved.

Beyond the immediate reliability issue, Leclerc pointed to a broader struggle with Ferrari's one-lap pace during Saturday qualifying compared to its race pace on Sunday. He explained that energy deployment is more of a challenge over a single lap and admitted that the team does not have any quick fixes for the issue, though any incremental gains in qualifying would directly benefit their race results.
